There are different types of pliers - round nose, flat nose, chain nose, etc. Get a round nose and a flat nose one initially. You also need a wire cutter. You can start practising with copper wires you get in hardware store, else you can buy guage wire in craft shops. There are different gauges (thickness) for different designs. Higher the gauge thinner the wire, ideal is 20G wire.
