Steamed Veg Momos
After my post on trying different tiffin items for breakfast/ dinner everyday rather than the boring dos/idli/ upma, I badly wanted to make Veg momos at home. I have tasted chicken momos on the streets and both of us love them to the core. We can easily have more than a plate of momos. So decided to try veg momos at home this Sunday. Thanks to Raks kitchen, for inspiring me to try momos :)

Thinking of what to cook for breakfast or dinner is the most toughest job for me in this world!! And I find it's a common problem for everybody else too... People at home get bored of the usual items if repeated too often. The moment breakfast is served, Sandy will ask what's for lunch and when lunch is served, "what's for dinner today?". I would be like "Somebody please do the meal plan for me!!".
I can manage to decide to cook something for lunch, depending on the vegetables available at home but not for breakfast! In this case I envy north indians because they don't have to think so much... roti and a sabji everyday and for all the three meals. We do cook roti/chapati for dinner, but not everyday. Again thinking of what sabji to make for roti is another problem. So I am going to have a collection of vegetarian tiffin (light meal) items here, with a link to their recipes. So that we can just bookmark this page and drop by to select an item to cook. Else I would give this list to my hubby and ask him choose everytime based on how long he can wait for me to make it. Half of my tension will be reduced... ooof!! If you feel that some item is missed out, please comment below so that it is helpful for others like me suffering from this cookingtiffinmania!! I have tried to group it based on the preparation time and cooking time. Because being a working woman, I don't do much planning ahead of time except for special occassions... like soaking the ingredients overnight, grinding the batter, leaving it to ferment for a while, etc. But I do grind my own dosa/idli batter once in two weeks and stock it in the fridge. Saves me most of the times :) Recent Recipe Collection: Healthy snacks and recipes with Nine different Whole Grains!! Navadhaniya Recipes!! I would also do a similar post soon for choosing sidedish/gravy/curry recipe for Roti. You would have heard about the famous cheese chilli toast... especially at the Mumbai roadsides shops. I was introduced to these by my mom first, she makes them at home. They make a great breakfast for the weekend or even a good evening snack option. Its cheesy, crunchy and juicy in the mouth. Yummm. . I cant wait to share the recipe with you.
We love to have Pavbhaji at any chat corner or north indian restaurant. It is always served with lots of butter, chopped onions for extra crunchiness and lemon wedges. My husband loves it to the core, so I thought let me try making it at home this time. My mom has made it a few times and turned out good, so I took her recipe as the base. Here we go...
Ingredients: Potato - 2 Carrot - 2 Green Peas - 1/2 cup Cauliflower florets - 1/2 cup (optional) Green Capsicum - 1 small Tomato chopped - 2 Onions finely chopped - 2 Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp Pavbhaji masala - 1 1/2 tsp Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp Turmeric - 1 pinch Jeera - 1/2 tsp Oil - 2 tbsp Butter - 2 tbsp Pav - 8 Salt Chopped Coriander leaves to garnish Lemon wedges on the side Pongal is a South Indian Rice Dish made for morning breakfast usually. I get tempted to have pongal in any of the South Indian famous restaurants... It tastes so heavenly when they serve it hot with a dollop of ghee, with white chutney and sambar. I love to have Pongal at any time of the day... but not the Karnataka style one. It is like porridge and you have to drink it... and the worse part is that they serve it with raitha. Eeeks!!
I make Pongal at home almost every week, because it's easy, tasty and heavy for weekend breakfast. So that my husband doesnt complain when lunch takes time. :) You would have read a lot of Pongal or Venpongal recipies... this one is especially for the working women who want to do stuff faster and avoid using lots of vessels for cooking. You need only one pressure cooker!! That's why i call it One pot Recipe. My hubby loves roti and naan so much that he orders them by default in any restaurant we go!!
But I've never tried making them at home, I meant the traditional tandoori way! I would rather make way with chapathis and phulkas everytime. We don't have a microwave at home yet, may be that's also a reason for not trying. :) I decided to give it a try, after remembering my mom making naan with a pan - she took all pains to do new stuffs for us without much gadgets those days!! Cakes, Spring rolls, naan, pizza, and much more without a oven... so let's give it a try the same way. Most of the Naan recipes online are made using yeast, but i did not have them in stock. So tried my own version with baking powder. Idiyappam is a very famous traditional food item from Tamil Nadu and Kerala (South India). Especially it's very famous in our Chettinad.
Chettinad is a part of Southern Tamil Nadu with Karaikkudi as the capital. It is known for it's specialty cooking recipes.. you can find this name added to many dishes in restaurant menu cards, like Chettinad Chicken, Chettinad Kara Kozhambu, etc. Some of the famous Chettinad items are: Sweets like Paal Paniyaram, Athirasam, Kavuniarisi, Aadi Koozh (Kummayam), Idiyappam, Aappam, Kuzhi Paniyaram, Vella Paniyaram, Therakkal and lots more. My taste buds are tempted by just writing them here. You should visit chettinad sometime to experience it's cuisine. The best way is to attend a Chettinad marriage function, you will be served food like a King!! The tradition of serving the guests with unlimited delicacies and absolute kindness. . They will serve you until you stop them on your own :) You can find all the varities mentioned served in a marriage feast! Get to experience it soon!! Chettinad is also known for it's culture, heritage and architectural designs using Marbles and Burma Teak. We would be starting a Vintage page soon with designs inspired from India and include Chettinad designs for you to inspire. We like pancakes a lot.. the original ones which are rich, soft and fluffy, served for continental breakfast in most posh restaurants. When I'm writing this, I could remember the hot pancakes served with maple syrup in a HongKong restaurant we stayed during our HM trip ;) The breakfast buffet spread was just awesome.. you will need half a day to taste each of the item there. Muffins, Croissants, Muesli, Yogurt in flavors, fruit spread, salads, Meats, Roasted Beans, Noodle and egg stations to customize your food. I still remember we had atleast 3 eggs with different toppings each day :P. I hope Sandy sees this post and takes me to another abroad trip just to enjoy such food!! Some of the photos we clicked two years back..
